Recent I fell down an internet rabbit hole, pertaining to adult literacy.
As a writer, poet, author, and more importantly, publisher, part of my job is to get the written work out there - into bookstores, on shelves, into people's hands.
The National Literacy Institute (headquartered and located in Texas) monitors American reading, writing, and literacy levels, and I assume offers services related to learning to read and write, and English as a second language.
I was taken aback and somewhat shocked at the levels of illiteracy in the U.S.
As of 2024, 21% of U.S. adults nationwide are illiterate and 54% of adults have a literacy below a 6th-grade level. That's 75% have a literacy below 6th grade. That's three in four. This number astounds me.
Getting the equivalent information for Canada was a little trickier as it is expressed differently and doesn't allow for direct comparison to the U.S.
According to Statistics Canada 49% scored below high-school literacy levels and 17% scored in the level 1 category (essentially illiterate). This is still 66%. Now, this report goes on to clarify that a disproportionately large number of this group are newcomers, Indigenous, and low-income populations, which I will assume stands true for the U.S. numbers as well (but not definitely).
It can be safely assumed that engaging in leisure reading is often perceived as a luxury in today's fast-paced world where time is a precious commodity. The act of immersing oneself in a good book requires not only time but also a certain level of disposable income to purchase books or access reading materials. However, it is important to note that libraries play a crucial role in making reading more accessible to a wider audience by offering a vast array of books and resources free of charge. Whether these libraries be public libraries or the small community share-a-book libraries we see popping up around our neighbourhoods.
By providing a space where individuals can explore various literary works without financial constraints, public or community libraries serve as a valuable resource for promoting literacy and a love for reading among people from diverse socio-economic backgrounds. Despite the perception of leisure reading as a luxury that necessitates disposable income, the existence of public libraries helps to bridge this gap and ensures that everyone has the opportunity to experience the joy and benefits of reading, regardless of their financial means.
As writers, poets, publishers, bookstore-frequenters, and readers, we are fortunate to have the privilege of engaging in the profound act of reading. The ability to immerse ourselves in the written word opens up a world of knowledge, imagination, and emotion that enriches our lives in countless ways. Through reading, we can explore new perspectives, travel to distant lands, and delve into the depths of human experience.
The luxury of reading lies not only in the access to a vast array of books and literary works but also in the opportunity to escape reality, to be inspired, and to connect with the thoughts and feelings of others. Reading allows us to broaden our horizons, challenge our beliefs, and expand our understanding of the world around us. Education plays a crucial role in shaping our future by equipping us with knowledge, skills, and perspectives that are essential for personal and professional growth. By investing in education, we not only expand our intellectual horizons but also enhance our ability to adapt to a rapidly changing world. This continuous learning process enables us to stay relevant in the job market, pursue new career opportunities, and achieve financial stability. Education acts as a gateway to unlocking a myriad of possibilities, empowering individuals to reach their full potential and make meaningful contributions to society. Embracing education not only enriches our lives but also paves the way for a brighter and more prosperous future.
Moreover, the act of reading is a form of self-care and mental nourishment. It provides a space for reflection, contemplation, and introspection in a fast-paced and often chaotic world. The ability to sit down with a good book and lose ourselves in its pages is a precious gift that we should never take for granted.
In a society where distractions abound and time is a precious commodity, the luxury of reading offers us a respite from the noise and a chance to slow down, focus, and engage with ideas that have the power to shape our lives.
Let us cherish this gift of reading and continue to explore the boundless wonders that the written word has to offer.
